Domestic Duct Cleaning

Evaporative Cooler Cleaning

Why have the ducts cleaned ?

Dust that enters houses remains trapped in curtains, carpets, furniture and in ducted heating systems. Nearly 18-20kgs of dust can be collected in a single household over a year. About a third of this dust is trapped in the ducted air system.

Dust and other air borne contaminates are drawn into the system, collect on the ductwork, fans and heating coils. Dust is also discharged and then re circulates continuously into the household environment.

Even with filters fitted to the system, it can not be ensured that some contaminants will not enter the local room environment. Contaminants are accumulated throughout the years, and can build up to a substantial amount as shown in the photos opposite.

What is in the dust ?

Dust is a combination of many substances and particles, however because they are so minute in size they collectively look like dust. Often its the particles in dust that trigger allergic reactions in people. The particles may include:

  • House dust mites
  • Bacteria and viruses
  • Moulds and fungi
  • Insect debris
  • Dander
  • Animal saliva and urine
  • Mice and rat feaces

Cleaning Process

Various sections of the system require different cleaning approaches and equipment.

The vents in the room are cleaned with a unique 360 degree air pressured cleaning head which is self propelled through the duct and removes contaminants and debris from the duct walls efficiently. This equipment is used in conjunction with a specialized vacuum system to capture the discharge from the ductwork.

The larger air return duct requires a different method of cleaning. A mechanized specially built soft brush system is the most effective method of cleaning this area of the ductwork.

The heating unit requires the fan to be removed to be cleaned, this also allows access to the other end of the air return duct to be finished cleaning with the mechanical brush. The fan and the unit are then cleaned by a combination of brushes and compressed air.

The completion of the cleaning is the sanitizing of the system.

Any problems identified during the cleaning process, such as insulation material present in the discharge which may indicate damage to the ductwork are then discussed with the customer. This may indicate a problem that needs to be addressed or something that needs to be monitored.

Maintenance

The following are indications that ductwork has been damaged and requires investigation to identify the extent of the problem. This may be a minor repair or replacement of section or all of the ductwork.

  • Loss of air flow
  • Smells from vents
  • Rodent damage
  • Water damage
  • Renovation damage
